I've stayed quiet during this political season, mainly because I didn't want the hate mail/spam that's been going around. Incidentally, I'm getting it anyway because I have a Kerry/Edwards sticker on my page. So, after this last debate, I'm going to give my two cents.
1.) Did Kerry cross a line by using Mary Cheney as an example?
No, he didn't. Here's Kerry's response to the questions from Bob Shefer regarding if homosexuality was a choice:
We're all God's children...And, I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was. She's being who she was born as. I think if you talked to anybody, it's not a choice.
He never called her out by name, he never made fun of her, Kerry just stated how it was. She is a lesbian and that is her life.Kerry is saying nothing bad about her, unlike a certain republican senator from Illinois by the name of Alan Keyes who called Mary Cheney a "selfish hedonist."
Now, as far as Mrs. Edwards saying that the Cheney's are ashamed of their daughter, I agree with her. If they had no shame, they wouldn't be throwing a tizzy fit. I mean, Cheney has used his daughter as an example plenty of times this election year. And, it was a nice comment about the Cheney's; they didn't force their daughter to conform to societal ideas. If the Cheney's plan on staying in public office, they had better get thicker skin, or keep to themselves. Whether or not they like it, their whole family is in the public eye.
For those of you wondering what President Bush's answer to the question was:
I don't know. I do know that we have a choice to make in America, and that is to treat people with tolerance and respect and dignity. It's important that we do that. And I also know in a free society, people --consenting adults-- can live the way they want.
Is it not kind of funny that Bush is so open minded all of a sudden?!
Bush Says Same-Sex Marriage Is a State Issue: "The state can do what they want to do. Don't try to trap me in this state's issue like you're trying to get me into." [Gov. George W. Bush on gay marriage, "Larry King Live," 2/15/00]
Bush Supports Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage: "Today I call upon the Congress to promptly pass, and to send to the states for ratification, an amendment to our Constitution defining and protecting marriage as a union of man and woman as husband and wife." [Bush, 2/24/04]
As this is so long, I think I'll do one issue per post until the election.
