An Email With My Uncle About a Hoax
I just got this email from my uncle about the US Bank hoax going one. I got the hoax yesterday, but I knew I didn't have an account there...so, I emailed it to him. Watch your own email boxes for it!
Yes
Even if you had a US Bank account they would never never never ask you to update your records on line.
If you had an account that a bank suspected of being accessed illegally the bank would certainly call you not email you.
If you're ever in doubt about the authenticity of an email from a bank, call then and as you probably noticed there is no phone number provided. An reason this look bogus.
If you would click on the link they provided you wouldn't go to the US Bank web site but a site the scammers created that would look exactly like the US Bank site to fool you.
When you "renew" your personal information there they get enough information to steal your identity.
This is called a phishing (as in fishing) scam. Where they fish the net for unsuspecting victims.
But not you. You were on your toes. Way to go.
Anytime anyone contacts you for personal information over the net don't do it.
They try to scare you. Failure to update your profile will result in account deletion so you'll respond right away without thinking.
This one is really poor. They should at least give a bogus phone number to call along with the bogus link.
